History 3
History: Part 1 History: Part 2 History: Part 3
On January 31, 1979, Rev. Allen Gale made his final retirement. A special vote of thanks should be given to both Mr. and Mrs. Gale for the devotion they showed towards our Church.
In 1973, Rev. Allen Gale came to St. Augustine’s to take charge. Allen had visited St. Augustine’s for many years before as a Lay Reader. Rev. Blas assisted Rev. Gale with communions. This was a very happy time in our Church Life. In 1974 Cryil Haynes joined the Church and assisted with the services, being a Lay Reader. In May 1975 Rev. Allen Gale retired although he remained to take care of all the sick visiting and exofficio members of the Vestry.
The Rev. West Davies took over the Ministerial Duties of St. Augustine’s, which was to be a part of Team Ministry with Holy Nativity. This was a very good relationship as we now had Rev. West Davis, Minister, Rev. Allen Gale, Deacon, and Cyril Haynes, Lay Reader. In 1977 Rev. Watson Lazarus had been back to Jamaica and was now ordained and joined our team. We had a very happy family and things were doing very well, both spiritual and monetary. Rev. Davies found it necessary to resign in July 1977 through medical reason re his son, who required special care, so the family returned to the U.S.A.
Rev. Allen Gale once more took over the running of the Church services, having been ordained a Priest on June 5th, 1977. This made our team Rev. Gale, Priest, Rev. Lazarus, Priest, and Cryil Haynes, Lay Reader. On January 31, 1979, Rev. Allen Gale made his final retirement. A special vote of thanks should be given to both Mr. and Mrs. Gale for the devotion they showed towards our Church.
In February 1979 Rev. Long took over the Ministerial duties. At this time we lost the services of Mr. Cyril Haynes, as he took over the Indian Church on the Sarcee Indian Reserve. In March 1980 Rev. Lazarus was
transferred to St. Johns Church. In 1981 Rev. C. Haynes was ordained as Priest. This being St. Augustine’s first member ordained to the Priesthood, quite a celebration was convened by our Guild, a gala event was held. Rev. Long had several health interruptions during the past year and felt he required some rest. Consequently his resignation was tendered. After meetings with the Bishop and Rev. Biney, it was decided that Rev. David Asher would replace Rev. Long in September 1981.
St. Augustine’s Church started sharing Rev. Asher’s services with St. Paul’s, Midnapore. This was no new experience as in Rev. Attwood’s time, he had to cover St. Augustine’s, Ogden, St. Luke’s, Forest Lawn, Anglican Churches in Shepard and Indus and with the occasional visit to Acme, which was accomplished by horse and buggy in the first years, and later by Ford car.
The Church at Indus burned down; the Church at Shepard was closed and converted to a granary, Forest Lawn St. Luke’s got their own Priest. Rev. Asher is the first full-time minister our Church has had in many years. That fact alone has provided a continuity within the Parish, and a solid base from which we are growing spiritually, but regretfully, not in numbers.
